Churo Health Center
Building a Health Center in Churo, Kenya
Accessibility to care in remote parts of Kenya can be improved through investment in medical infrastructure projects and better coordination of limited resources. Churches and Christian organizations play a necessary role in helping communities improve access through the compassion of giving and the Christ-centered spirit of redeeming God’s world.
The Foundation’s inaugural project is building a health center in Churo, Kenya. Churo is a remote community located in Tiaty East Sub County, which covers 788 square miles and has a population of 74,000. Women of childbearing age make up 36% of the female population. Infants and children between the ages of zero to fourteen comprise 44% of the total population.
Limited access to care is a glaring problem in the vast regions of remote populations. Health indicators bear out the impact of this issue particularly among women of childbearing age, infants, and children. money the Foundation will develop the clinical infrastructure needed to support local physician practice which requires clinical exam space, a surgical capacity for complicated deliveries and outpatient procedures along with a modern diagnostic laboratory and radiology service.
Healthcare in Tiaty East Sub County is currently provided through an aging patchwork of dispensary facilities. Care available in a dispensary is limited to immunizations, treating of basic illnesses, limited pre/postnatal care, and assistance with uncomplicated deliveries and well-baby checkups. It is not an exaggeration to say the dispensaries are little more than first-aid stations. A hemorrhage during labor, or a critically ill infant are simply untreatable in this setting, and the result is often fatal.
The new health center will house exam rooms, a pharmacy, an outpatient laboratory, diagnostic radiology, a surgical procedure room, labor/delivery rooms and nursery, and observation beds. The project also includes building hostel quarters for patients and families needing to remain on-site for monitoring and managing outpatient care.
Through the grace of God, we hope to touch the hearts of donors whose giving is necessary to make the Churo health center a reality.
